Copyright protection is available for original works of authorship reduced to a tangible medium, such as computer programs, literary, musical, and dramatic works; pictorial, graphical, structural, and architectural works; motion pictures and other audiovisual works; and sound recordings. The copyright owner can gain exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute copies, create derivative works, and perform or display the work.
In the U.S., copyright registration is required to enforce these exclusive rights. To register a copyright, the owner must file an application with the U.S. Copyright Office along with a fee and an appropriate copy of the work. Timely registration affords the owner statutory benefits in an infringement action. Holzer Patel Drennan assists clients with all phases of copyright registration and proper use of notices on copyrighted works. We also assist clients with investigations related to copyright infringement issues.
